What is an expression number?
In Pythagorean numerology, every letter of the alphabet maps to a number from 1 to 9. Your expression number is calculated by assigning a number to each letter in your full birth name, adding them all together, and reducing the total to a single digit — or a master number (11, 22, 33) if the sum arrives there.
Where your life path number describes the nature of your journey, the expression number describes what you carry into that journey — the innate talents, characteristic tendencies, and natural mode of self-expression you were born with.

Frequently asked questions
What is an expression number?
Your expression number (also called the destiny number) is calculated from the full name on your birth certificate using the Pythagorean letter-to-number chart. It reveals your innate talents, natural abilities, and the way you express yourself in the world — the gifts you were born with.
Should I use my full birth name or my current name?
Use the name exactly as it appears on your original birth certificate, including your middle name. This is the name numerologists use because it captures the vibration present at the moment of your birth. Married names and nickname-based calculations produce different numbers with different meanings.
How is the expression number different from the life path number?
Your life path number (from your birth date) describes the nature of your journey and the lessons you are here to learn. Your expression number (from your birth name) describes how you naturally express yourself and the talents you have available to work with. Together they give a much fuller picture.
What if I have a hyphenated or accented name?
For Pythagorean numerology, use only the standard English alphabet letters A–Z. Drop hyphens and convert accented letters to their base form (e.g., é → e, ñ → n) before calculating. If your name was registered with specific accent marks, use the base letter equivalents.
Can the expression number be a master number?
Yes. If the total of all your name letters reduces to 11, 22, or 33, those are kept as master numbers and not reduced further — the same rule that applies to life path numbers.
