Frequently asked questions
What is a natal moon phase?
Your natal moon phase is the phase the moon was in at the moment of your birth — New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter, or Waning Crescent. Each phase carries an archetypal quality that some astrologers believe is imprinted on your personality and emotional style.
Is a moon phase the same as a moon sign?
No — these are two different things. Your moon sign is the zodiac sign the moon occupied at the moment of your birth (e.g., Moon in Scorpio). Your natal moon phase is the shape of the moon at your birth in its cycle from New to Full and back. Both offer insight, but they are calculated differently and mean different things.
How accurate is this moon phase calculator?
This calculator uses a mathematical approximation based on a known reference new moon (January 6, 2000) and the mean synodic period of 29.53 days. It is accurate to within about one day for most dates between 1930 and 2005. For a precise, astronomically-verified natal moon phase with exact degree position, a professional chart tool is recommended.
What does being born under a Full Moon mean?
Full Moon births are associated with a heightened emotional nature, visibility, and a life lived in the open. Full Moon people tend to feel things intensely, attract attention without seeking it, and live in a way where relationships and the outside world play a central role. The Full Moon axis (Sun-Moon opposition) can also indicate a tension between personal needs and others' expectations.
What does a New Moon birth mean?
New Moon births are associated with instinctive new beginnings, a self-referential emotional style, and a strong drive to initiate. New Moon people often trust their own instincts over external validation and are naturally drawn to fresh starts and original paths. The New Moon is the beginning of the cycle — and so are they.
