Natal astrology guide
Mars in Every Sign
In your natal chart, Mars describes your drive — how you pursue goals, where your physical energy goes, how you handle competition, and how you experience and act on anger and desire. Mars is not just aggression; it is ambition, initiative, and the force of will that turns intention into action.
Mars changes sign roughly every six to eight weeks, so your birth date determines which sign it occupies. The sign shapes the style of the drive — whether it burns fast or builds slowly, whether it confronts directly or approaches from an angle, whether it fuels individual ambition or collective purpose.
Mars dignity: what it means
Each planet has signs where it operates with special ease or special friction. Mars is most directly itself in Aries and Scorpio (its home signs, called domicile), most strategically refined in Capricorn (its exaltation), and operates under real friction in Taurus and Libra (detriment) and Cancer (fall). In all other signs Mars is peregrine — fully capable, without special force in either direction.
Detriment and fall are not bad placements — they are placements where the planet's natural operating style meets friction that produces distinctive qualities. Mars in Cancer's fall produces the most protective and emotionally motivated drive. Mars in Libra's detriment produces the most strategically diplomatic assertion.
