Trine
A 120° aspect linking planets of the same element, producing effortless harmony, natural talent, and flowing energy.
Meaning
Ptolemy considered the trine the most harmonious of his five major aspects in Tetrabiblos (c. 150 CE). Planets in trine are four signs apart and always within the same element — for example, Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius all form trines with each other within the fire element. This elemental kinship means the two planets' energies are naturally compatible: they speak the same language and reinforce each other without friction. The result is ease, talent, and natural flow in the areas of life those planets govern. William Lilly (Christian Astrology, 1647) treated trine as the strongest positive testimony in horary — when the significators were in trine, the matter would come to a good conclusion with minimal obstruction. In natal chart interpretation, trines mark innate gifts, areas where things come easily, and where energy flows without conscious effort. The caution, noted by Robert Hand (Horoscope Symbols, 1981), is complacency: because trine energy requires no struggle, it can be underutilized or taken for granted. Dane Rudhyar (The Astrology of Personality, 1936) described the trine as the aspect of fulfillment — but also of potential inertia if the native never develops what comes easily into something more intentional. The traditional orb for a trine is approximately 6°–8°.
Why it matters
Natal trines are your built-in advantages — areas of natural grace that repay active development rather than passive enjoyment.
