The 5 Chinese elements
Wu Xing (五行), often translated as the Five Elements or Five Phases, is one of the foundational frameworks of Chinese cosmology, medicine, and astrology. The five elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water — describe five fundamental types of energy and their relationships to each other, to the seasons, and to human nature.
Unlike Western astrology's four elements (Fire, Earth, Air, Water), the Chinese system includes five phases that both create and control each other in an ongoing cycle. Wood feeds Fire; Fire creates Earth (ash); Earth produces Metal; Metal holds Water; Water nourishes Wood. Each element's energy flavors the years it governs.

How elements and animals combine
The Chinese zodiac operates on a 60-year sexagenary cycle — the product of 12 animal signs and 10 Heavenly Stems (which encode the 5 elements in both Yang and Yin forms). This means each specific element-animal pairing (for example, Water Tiger or Wood Rabbit) only repeats once every 60 years.
The animal sign describes your core nature: your instincts, relational style, and fundamental personality. The element modifies and colors that nature. A Fire Tiger is more impulsive and dramatic than an Earth Tiger, who is steadier and more grounded. A Metal Rat brings more precision and discipline to the Rat's native adaptability, while a Water Rat adds depth and introspection.
The Yin or Yang polarity of the year adds a further layer: Yang years carry outward, assertive, expansive energy; Yin years carry inward, receptive, and refining energy. This combination of animal, element, and polarity creates 60 distinct archetypes in the Chinese astrological tradition.

What is my Chinese zodiac element?
In Chinese astrology, every birth year belongs to one of five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water. These five elements cycle in 2-year pairs, determined by the last digit of your Chinese birth year (adjusted for the Chinese New Year). The element describes the energetic quality of your year — and, in combination with your animal sign, forms a unique 60-year cycle called the sexagenary cycle. Your element shapes the expression of your animal's traits, making each element-animal pairing distinct.
What is the difference between my animal sign and my element?
Your animal sign (Rat, Ox, Tiger, etc.) cycles every 12 years and describes your core personality, instincts, and relational style. Your element (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) cycles every 10 years in a 2-year pair pattern and describes the energetic quality through which your animal nature is expressed. Together they form a 60-year cycle — so a Wood Dragon, for example, only occurs once every 60 years. This is why Chinese astrology says you only share your complete zodiac type with people born exactly 60 years apart.
How does the Chinese New Year affect my element?
The Chinese New Year falls between January 21 and February 20 each year, so people born in January or early February may belong to the previous year's animal and element rather than the one most people associate with their birth year. For example, someone born on January 15, 2000 would have a Chinese zodiac year of 1999, making them an Earth Rabbit (not Metal Dragon, which began on February 5, 2000). This calculator uses exact Chinese New Year dates to apply this correction automatically.
What does each of the 5 Chinese elements mean?
Wood represents growth, creativity, and upward expansion — associated with spring and vision. Fire represents passion, transformation, and dynamic energy — associated with summer and action. Earth represents stability, nurturing, and reliable foundation-building — associated with seasonal transitions. Metal represents precision, discipline, and refinement — associated with autumn and integrity. Water represents wisdom, depth, and fluid adaptability — associated with winter and intuition. Each element has generating (creating) and controlling (checking) relationships with the others, forming a complex interdependent system.
Is the Chinese element the same as the BaZi element?
Your birth year element is one layer of BaZi (Four Pillars of Destiny), but BaZi goes much deeper. A full BaZi chart calculates elements for all four pillars: year, month, day, and hour — each with a Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch. The year pillar (what this calculator finds) is considered the outermost layer, describing your social persona and ancestral influences. The day pillar is considered the most personal and is called your Day Master. A complete BaZi reading requires your exact birth date, time, and location.
