What are annual profections?
Annual profections are one of the oldest techniques in Western astrology, rooted in the Hellenistic tradition and documented by astrologers like Vettius Valens in the 2nd century CE. The technique is elegantly simple: the 1st house is activated at birth (age 0), and each subsequent year activates the next house in sequence. At age 12, the cycle returns to the 1st house and begins again.
Each house corresponds to a different domain of life. The activated house for any given year — the "profected house" — signals which area of life will be particularly prominent, tested, or developed during that 12-month window (birthday to birthday). The planet that rules the sign on the cusp of the profected house in your natal chart becomes the "lord of the year," a timing indicator that astrologers watch closely in transits and other predictive techniques.

Frequently asked questions
What are annual profections in astrology?
Annual profections are a traditional Hellenistic astrology technique for timing life themes by year. Starting from the 1st house at birth (age 0), the active house advances by one house per year. At age 12, the cycle returns to the 1st house and repeats. Each house governs a different area of life — identity, money, communication, home, romance, health, relationships, and so on. The house that is activated for a given year is called the 'profected house,' and the planetary ruler of that house's sign becomes the 'lord of the year.'
How do annual profections work?
The calculation is simple: take your age (completed years as of your most recent birthday) and divide by 12. The remainder — 0 through 11 — corresponds to houses 1 through 12. Age 0 = 1st house year. Age 1 = 2nd house year. Age 12 = 1st house again. Age 29 = 6th house (29 ÷ 12 = 2 remainder 5, so 5th index = 6th house). The profection year runs from one birthday to the next. The 'lord of the year' — the planet that rules the sign on the cusp of the profected house in your natal chart — becomes especially important in transits and other timing techniques for that 12-month period.
What does a 7th house profection year mean?
A 7th house profection year places the spotlight on one-on-one relationships: romantic partnerships, business partnerships, collaborations, contracts, and open adversaries. In a 7th house year, the themes of commitment, negotiation, and the dynamics of how you relate to others become prominent. Many people experience major relationship milestones — marriage, divorce, the beginning or end of a significant partnership, or a defining business collaboration — during 7th house years. The planetary ruler of the 7th house sign in your natal chart becomes especially activated by transits throughout the year.
What does a 10th house profection year mean?
A 10th house profection year activates career, public reputation, authority, and legacy. This is the year you are most visible — promotions, public recognition, leadership opportunities, and reputation-defining decisions tend to cluster in 10th house profection years. The shadow of a 10th house year can involve public scrutiny or confrontations with authority figures. Your natal chart's 10th house ruler and any planets in your 10th house become the key indicators for how this year unfolds specifically for you.
How do annual profections relate to transits?
Annual profections and transits are two different layers of the same traditional timing system. Profections identify which house and planetary ruler are 'activated' or given special significance for the year — they set the theme. Transits show the actual movement of planets through the sky and how they activate specific chart points — they show the events. When a transit from the current year's lord of the year makes an important aspect to a natal planet, traditional astrologers consider this a 'triggered' moment of heightened importance. Using both together gives a much richer picture than either alone. Astrelle calculates both simultaneously, showing you not just your profected house but which transits are activating it right now.
